Long-Time Interval Satellite Image Analysis on Forest-Cover Changes and Disturbances around Protected Area, Zeya State Nature Reserve, in the Russian Far East

Boreal forest areas in the Russian Far East contained very large intact forests. This particular area is considered one of most productive and diverse forests boreal biome world, it also home to many endangered species. Zeya State Nature Reserve located at southern margin has rich fauna flora. However, region faced large-scale fires clearcutting for timber recently. The information disturbances rarely understood. study aimed explore effects disturbance dynamics around reserve. Our used two-year overlaid Landsat images from 5 Thematic Mapper (TM) 8 Operational Land Imager (OLI), generate forest-cover-change maps 1988–1999, 1999–2010, 2010–2016. In this paper, we analyze direction successional stages, demonstrate effectiveness protected terms preventing human-based deforestation on vegetation indices. indices included normalized burn ratio (NBR), difference index (NDVI), water (NDWI). provided pattern forest-cover change NDWI was differentiate between non-water areas. mean values NBR NDVI were calculated determine stages burn, recovery, grass, mixed forest, oak birch larch forest. accuracy assessed by using field measurements, photos, high-resolution as references. Overall, our classification results have high all three periods. disturbed occurred during reserve highly protected, with no human-disturbance activity. fire found (137 km2) 1999–2010. findings show a disturbance, mostly outside Mixed increased almost 50 km2 2010–2016, buffer zone We recommend future works apply methods other ecosystems, compare inside area.
